It's the fourth quarter. Three months left in the year.
Some of us are sprinting to the finish. Some of us are just hoping to get there. And a lot of us are looking at the goals we wrote down in January and wondering what happened.
Here's the thing - most of us try to finish the year strong by working on what people can see. The numbers. The scale. The highlight reel. But the stuff that actually decides how this year ends sits a lot deeper than that.
Think about an iceberg
You know the picture. Most of an iceberg sits underwater. What you see on top is real, but it's the small part.
Your life works the same way. What people see above the waterline - your results, your energy, how you show up at work and at home - is shaped by everything underneath it. Your experiences. The influences you've let in. The choices you've made, over and over, for years.
We love to work above the waterline. We fix how things look. We compare ourselves to everybody else's front-stage life. We say "I'm fine" and "I got this" when we don't. I don't either, to be honest with you. I need this as much as anyone reading it.
But if you want a different finish, you have to go to work on what's underneath.
Your thoughts are on repeat
Some thoughts we control. Some just show up. And a big share of what runs through our heads today is the same stuff that ran through yesterday, and the day before that.
So we wonder why change is hard. Man, it's hard to change something that plays on repeat every single day.
Great leader, pastor and author Craig Groeschel puts it this way: you do what you do because of what you think of you. Tony Robbins says the strongest force in the human personality is the need to remain consistent with how we see ourselves.
Put those together and you get the real reason New Year's goals fade by spring. We try to change the behavior and leave the identity alone. Then we fall back to that which is familiar.
Knowledge isn't power until you use it
Change starts with desire. You have to actually want it - not want to look like you want it.
Then you have to become aware of what's going on under the surface, and start putting better inputs in. Better reading. Better conversations. Better people around you. Better reps.
And here's where most of us stall out. Knowledge is not power. The consistent application of knowledge is power. Knowing what to do and doing it day in and day out are two very different things.
Don't hand your thinking to a machine
We're moving out of the information age and into what I'd call the artificial age. Information used to be a click away. Now it feels like intelligence is a click away too. Ask the app, get the answer, move on.
I use AI every day and have for more than two years. I'm not against it. But I've learned to check and double-check what comes back, because it's wrong more often than people think. It's fast and it's confident. It doesn't have wisdom or discernment the way a person does.
If you let it do all of your critical thinking, it will end up doing your thinking for you. The things AI will never have - judgment, wisdom, real connection with another human being - are exactly what's worth training right now. That's under-the-waterline work too.
Grow through it, not just go through it
Why does any of this matter? Because growth was never meant to stop with us.
Rory Vaden says you are most equipped to serve the person you once were. Whatever you've been through this year, the question is whether you grew through it or just went through it. Grow through it, and you get to help the next person coming up behind you. For me that starts with my faith - becoming the person God created me to be - so I can be a better steward of the relationships and resources I've been trusted with.
That's what a strong finish really looks like. Not a better-looking year. A better you, for the people around you.
Your 17-minute challenge
Here's your One More Rep for this week. Just one.
Take 17 minutes alone. No phone, no laptop, no AI. Grab a notebook and answer three questions:
- What's most important to me right now?
- Are my days actually lined up with it?
- What's under my waterline that nobody sees - and what one thing needs work?
Then sit with one more question, and let it be a little uncomfortable. It is for me:
If someone filmed your life for the last seven days, what would the video say is most important to you?
You don't have to fix the whole year this week. Pick one thing below the waterline and give it a rep today. You are worth it, and you have what it takes.
Let's grow!
